MUCH later, as we began our drive to Madrid, an eight-hour car trip from San Sebastian, I decided to reveal another side of my personality. I wasn’t sure how Tono would react to this kinkier trait, being the good Catholic boy he was, but he’d surprised me in the bedroom so far, and I figured, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

“How do you feel about group sex?” I asked casually, grabbing the wheel when Tono let go and turned toward me in shock.

“What?”

“Easy, majo. We want to arrive alive.”

“¿Qué dices? ¿Un orgia?”

“Not an orgy, Tono, just a three-way.”

“¡Por dios, hombre!”

“You can’t be as innocent as you sound.”

“I’m not an idiot.”

“I didn’t say that, majo. Haven’t you ever done anything wild and unpredictable?”

“No.”

“I can understand being cautious in Spain, but didn’t you ever let your hair down when you lived in Florida? No one knew you over there.”

“That’s not who I am.”

“No, I suppose not. You really are old-fashioned in many ways.”

“I believe in monogamy.”

“So do I.”

“You just said you want to have sex with someone else.” Tono gripped the steering wheel so hard that his fingers were white. I could tell he was trying to control his temper, and this discussion could very well escalate into our first fight.

“Having sex is far different from giving someone your heart.”

“How’s that possible?”

“Tono, one has nothing to do with the other.”

“You can have sex with someone you don’t love?”

“Majo, please don’t be jealous. Sex is an enjoyable part of life like eating and drinking. Why deprive yourself of new experiences with other men when there’s a smorgasbord out there.”

“You’re already bored with me?” He looked like he was about to implode. His face had taken on the color of a ripe tomato, and I would have laughed except I knew he wasn’t joking. If I had any hope of winning this argument, I had better take his anger and his concerns quite seriously.

“So long as you and I are in agreement, and no one gets hurt, there shouldn’t be any issues. It’s a one-time event, not an ongoing thing.”

“Did you and Paul have an open relationship?”

“We had sex with others, if that’s what you’re asking, but we had rules. It’s not an open relationship―that’s different.”

“I’m trying to understand, Mick; please be patient with me. I’m not out or experienced like you.”

“I understand.” Except I didn’t. I was still getting used to being in the closet again, a state of mind I’d only had to deal with for a very brief time before leaving for college. By the time Paul and I had been discovered on that fateful night of the prom, I was more than ready to come out. Once my parents were informed, I never looked back. Yet here I was, ensconced in the Dark Ages again. Being with Tono was an ongoing game of subterfuge, ducking reporters and friends alike. Granted, Tono was worth all the lies and deception, but between the two of us, I expected complete honesty. No one had to be hurt if we only dealt with strangers away from the home turf.
